I cried more than I can remember crying at a book since I read Elie Weisel’s Dawn/Day/Night trilogy last summer, and then I cried a LOT. Visually, prose-wise, theme-wise… utterly, utterly beautiful. Even if you’ve seen the film (which I haven’t yet!) read the book, because it is BEAUTIFUL. This seemingly impossible task will bring Oskar into contact with survivors of all sorts on an exhilarating, affecting, often hilarious, and ultimately healing journey.Īlthough not a new book, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is on both my Goodreads 2013 Challenge List and my Wishlist Challenge 2013, as well as featuring in my vague list of titles to read for the BoutOfBooks Challenge, so I figured this qualified it for a review! In addition, this happens to be one of the best books I’ve ever read in my whole life, and I want to use this blog to recommend it to every single person who hasn’t already picked it up. Egan has said that the novel was inspired by two sources: Proust's À la Recherche du Temps Perdu, and HBO's The Sopranos. The book received rave reviews when it was published in the US last year, and for good reason it has since been named a finalist for several prestigious American prizes. T he title of Jennifer Egan's new novel may make it sound more like an episode of Scooby-Doo than an exceptional rendering of contemporary America, but don't be fooled. The astronomers' interest is further piqued when they realise the asteroid has an extremely rapid rotation period of four minutes and is exceptionally large. Its speed (100,000 km/h – 62,150 m/h) and the angle of its trajectory clearly indicate it is not on a long orbit around the sun, but is an interstellar object. It is detected by astronomers in the year 2131 while it is still outside the orbit of Jupiter. The "Rama" of the title is an alien starship weighing at least ten trillion tons, initially mistaken for an asteroid categorised as "31/439". The concept was later extended with several sequels, written by Clarke and Gentry Lee.Īfter an asteroid falls in Northeast Italy on 11 September 2077, creating a major disaster, the government of Earth sets up the Spaceguard system as an early warning of arrivals from deep space. The novel won both the Hugo and Nebula awards upon its release, and is regarded as one of the cornerstones in Clarke's bibliography. The story is told from the point of view of a group of human explorers who intercept the ship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries. Set in the 2130s, the story involves a 50-by-20-kilometre (31 by 12 mi) cylindrical alien starship that enters the Solar System. Rendezvous with Rama is a science fiction novel by British writer Arthur C. Hugo Award for Best Novel, Nebula Award for Best Novel, John W. His enthusiasm for books and movies runs deep, although not necessarily toward the objects you might expect. He cites love, particularly parents’ for their children, as one of humankind’s redeeming qualities, but for Cronin, art and literature are also cornerstones of a world worth saving - or building. “That’s the job of apocalyptic literature.” “Am I looking for a happy ending? Not per se, but I’m looking for an ending where what is worth saving is evident,” he said.
